چکیده

Abstract Introduction It is standard practise for incision and drainage (I+D) of abscesses in our general surgery department to be performed under anaesthetic (GA), despite evidence that local (LA) safe effective. Aims To evaluate the acceptability environmental benefits LA abscess I+D. Methods Data were collected assessed from January-July 2022. Abscesses >5cm, perianal/perineal, on multiple sites, or drained during another procedure deemed unsuitable LA. Questionnaires patient opinions sustainability distributed 26 patients requiring I+D November-December 22. Carbon footprints calculated using published carbon footprint estimates travel healthcare activity. Results 130 162 seen with underwent I+D, 119 done GA. Of those who had GA 71 possibly suitable these patients, 66 following day, admission go home return. The estimated additional performing procedures was 1,806kgCO2e. 84% surveyed thought it ‘important’ ‘very important’ their cost effective, 57% good environment. Conclusion Performing could save 3,096kgCO2e per year: equivalent driving 19,000km. would also money, emergency list space more convenient patients. important many treatments are sustainable.

Peritonsillar abscess: clinical presentation and efficacy of incision and drainage under local anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is one of the most commonly encountered abscess in the head and neck region. The aims of this study were to list the frequency of the disease by age, sex and laterality, and to list the presentation of the disease by symptoms, signs and complications, and to determine the efficacy of incision and drainage (I&D) procedure under local anaesthesia (LA) in ter...

Procedure: incision and drainage of a superficial abscess.

Pyogenic bacteria such as the Staphylococcus Aureus characteristically produce a circumscribed area of tissue necrosis leading to abscess formation. An abscess consists of (i) a central cavity containing pus, which is essentially liquefied necrotic tissue along with dead poiymorphs and bacteria (many of the latter are alive) and (ii) a surrounding wall, the inner layer of which is again necroti...

A skin abscess model for teaching incision and drainage procedures

BACKGROUND Skin and soft tissue infections are increasingly prevalent clinical problems, and it is important for health care practitioners to be well trained in how to treat skin abscesses. A realistic model of abscess incision and drainage will allow trainees to learn and practice this basic physician procedure. METHODS We developed a realistic model of skin abscess formation to demonstrate ...

Roving Faster Farther Cheaper

Current Mars rovers travel a few kilometers per year. Future rovers will need to travel a couple orders of magnitude faster than that in order to move from safe landing zones to areas of scientific interest – which may be many 10s of kilometers away from a suitable landing location. This paper describes a recent field test of the SR-II rover. SR-II is a 22kg solar powered autonomous rover, whic...
